Teachers know the subjects they are teaching. The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils
Evidence1: EDT 676 Science Unit Plan- Systems of the Human Body
Rationale 1: This unit plan was developed to introduce 4th grade students to Human Body Systems in science. Throughout this unit, students are introduced to a variety of media sources while learning the main systems of the human body. Students are then asked to create a presentation of one of the systems of the human body to share with the class. There are many different media tools and presentation tools that are introduced while covering content area. Students then use a hands on approach to share and solidify what they have learned. By creating their own presentation, students have an active role in the learning process.
This unit was one of the first units I taught using different media sources. It was a learning experience for all of us. It helped me to explore different venues for teaching. It has also allowed me to utilize different ways to assess learning. By teaching this unit, I was able to put some of the responsibility of learning on the students.
I was amazed at how much more student involvement I had in the reviews. I felt students were more on task and motivated in learning through technology. I was also very impressed with the student presentations. I observed that the students preferred to learn using technology.
KSD: 1.K.3 The teacher relates his/her disciplinary knowledge to other subject areas.
By teaching this unit, I was able to incorporate my knowledge in 21st Century technology with Science. It was very fascinating to see students excited to learn and eager to work on their science presentations. By using technology in my classroom, I am able to create an interdisciplinary learning experience that integrates technology with core subject areas.
1.S.3 The teacher can evaluate teaching resources and curriculum materials for their comprehensiveness, accuracy, and usefulness in representing particular ideas and concepts.
Students used podcasts, a Teachertube video, Brainpop, PowerPoint, as well as pre-selected websites to learn about the systems of the human body. In order to teach this lesson, I had to explore many sources of information to see which sources taught the key concepts that were appropriate to my 4th grade class and best met the state standards.
1.D.4 The teacher is committed to continuous learning and engages in professional discourse about subject matter knowledge and children’s learning of the discipline.
By teaching this unit, I explored a variety of teaching presentation methods as well as student presentation ideas. While looking at new teaching ideas using technology in this unit, I had to evaluate each to make sure the sources of information were accurate and up-to-date. There are many new teaching approaches using technology. I will continue to explore and evaluate new sources and 21st Century technology concepts to stay abreast.
